The systemic adoption of a second language in the schooling process is one of the major changes that Brazilian education has undergone in recent years. The so-called bilingual schools have been growing as part of the globalization process, presenting themselves as a response to the demands of families from different social backgrounds. In this context, WHF was responsible for collaborating with GRUPO SEB on a structuring project to adopt bilingual education in its schools in Brazil.
What for many may only mean a pedagogical decision is, from a service perspective, a major challenge. Converting a mature, fully-functioning school into a bilingual school is a challenge that involves respect for the individuality of the students, a complex redesign of the services and workforce, as well as a major impact on the relationship with families. All of this needs to run smoothly without jeopardizing the students' performance and progress in school.
To resolve this issue, WHF worked in the field to recognize and characterize the student and family groups from this perspective, understanding their specific needs, desires and restrictions on the subject. After extensive work in the field, it was possible to redesign school and pedagogical services based on solutions created by the WHF team in partnership with GRUPO SEB educators. The pilot project took place in schools in Ribeirão Preto (SP) and was then successfully implemented on a national scale.
